Had a thunderstorm roll through yesterday, and power went out long enough to cause the computers to power down. When it came back up, my main machine is making me supply user name and password again for all sites that normally keep me logged in all the time.

Any idea for why this might be? Everything else on the machine works fine.

Sounds as though the system crashed and were lost/corrupted or the recovery deleted those things. I've had similar happen to me after a program induced system crash.

My husband has a power conditioner for his stereo, I just have a surge protector. If I plugged into his conditioner it would do the trick. But it is way across the room. THe conditioner is supposed to protect against any kind of electical surge. Very expensive tho.

I have 4 UPS systems. Two for my computer and some peripherals, one for my wife's computer, and one for our DVR! (The Comcast modem is on the UPS at my computer.)

Of course a UPS system would solve the problem but with 5 computers not practicle.
That's a case of the "tail shaking the dog", I am seeking a corrective software solution that corrects a flaw either in Windows or Internet Explorer.
I have asked the question of data loss from power outages at other computer related forums with no workable results, was hoping for some guru here to solve the problem.

Once you solve the problem through a software solution Microsoft may want to hire you!

From everything I've seen, this appears to be an issue with IE8, regardless of whether you're running Windows 7, Vista or XP. What I don't know is if it's a bug, or by design.

What I used to do to avoid the whole problem of power outages and power surges, was to run my laptop full time off two deep discharge 12v batteries. Then I rigged up a quick switch system so that while I was using one battery, I would be charging the other. Since the laptop had its own batteries, I could switch on the fly with no trouble.

However, most people would not probably want to go online with a laptop. To power a desktop system, I guess you could have several 12v batteries hooked in parallel, powering one or more large 110v inverters that would put out a good sine wave pattern, and you'd have a nice homemade UPS. I've read about such things but haven't done it myself. You could have several solar panels keeping the batteries charged, I suppose.

I guess what puzzles me is why were the cookies deleted and nothing else harmed, so far as I can tell. Very bizarre.

You forget how many sites you've registered for until you have to re-enter your credentials all over again.
