Question Which Version of Windows 7 Do You Have or Want?

I'm still using Windows XP on my three computers, and although I'm looking forward to replacing them, I know that the learning curve will be both fun and a chore. You can teach an old dog new tricks!

I've only listed the three main choices for Windows 7. I left out the Starter version since it is only available for Netbooks. Windows Ultimate only offers two extra features, Bit Locker and Switch Languages on the fly. I will get Professional for the Windows XP Mode.

I could get by with Pro, but MS gave me access to a bunch of Ultimate licenses, so I use that. I've never used anything but the Ultimate version, actually, although in Win7 I think the main advantage of Ultimate is the optional USB encryption.

I have professional loaded on my Desktops, and Home Premium on my Laptops. That configuration gives me the ability to connect to my desktops to run applications with Remote Desktop.

Some time back, before Windows 7 was released I read somewhere that Ultimate gave the ability to turn off many of the bothersome security features/alerts that plagued Vista, so I thought I would get Ultimate just for that reason. Then I found that you can do that in the other versions as well and didn't see the need for Ultimate.

I'm still interested in learning about more Ultimate can offer over the other versions before I buy.
