It seems that once styles are named in Word, renaming them using the Modify menu results not in a new name, but in a new additional name. For example, in the attached graphic, you'll see that I renamed Heading 1 to "Heading1," and word simply added the new style name to the existing name.
Is there a way to get Word to totally rename a style? __________________

You may rename any styles you have created, but you cannot rename any of the predefined styles supplied with Word
