Default Ethernet Cable May Replace HDMI

I just read an interesting article about a coming change in A/V wiring. Ethernet for A/V equipment.

Ethernet cable can carry over 100Mbps and can be over 300 feet long. There is a new standard developed by Sony, Samsung, and LG, called HDBaseT.

The article goes on to say that we may see this new standard on equipment this year and that HDBaseT (Ethernet cable) will replace HDMI.

I think this sounds like good advance notice and I'm going to keep it in mind for any future purchases of any A/V equipment.

Well if Ethernet is going to be used for more things, then we're going to need to move away from the *one* standard Ethernet jack in devices today.

Interesting, Ken, and not such a bad idea. I'd be all for having fewer types of cables around.

If this does come to pass, it'll be interesting to see what happens to cable prices. Ethernet cables are pretty inexpensive. HDMI? That's another story. I was in a store last week and there were 6' HDMI cables ranging in price from $12 to $84. They'll probably start putting fancy plugs on some cables and selling them for exorbitant prices too.

The easy way might be to just have a separate A/V jack, labeled as such, which won't stop people from using the wrong one.....

I feel sure they will find a way to make money off any way it goes!

This is a great way to transmit A/V signals over greater distances than current cables allow. We've been using this for surveillance video for several years now and it works great. When you've got a spontaneous temporary run to make 200 feet of ethernet cable is far easier to drag out than 200 feet of composite video cable.

This is pretty interesting.

Back at the school we had every room wired for Ethernet. This included the A/V stations. For video we used converters at the back of each teacher PC going into the wall with another converter on the back of the large screen displays in the A/V cabinets. It worked okay but the converters were a bit pricey and they needed to be powered at both ends.

Jon.
