Since I've banned the use of Windows operating systems on my personal machines (alright, I concede, it's still there, just rarely used) I use the following:
Digikam for photo management Ufraw for RAW conversion Gimp for post processing Luminance HDR for HDR work Hugin for panorama stitching Should I find myself needing to do some photo editing under Windows I use most of the above with the addition of Irfanview. It's my favorite Windows photo viewer/editor. I also keep Faststone viewer hand as well. Another great app for simple editing work. __________________

I am fairly new to photography on a serious level so although I have quite a few programs I use, there are many I am trying out at this time. Eventually I hope I can just break it down to just a few but here they are,
DPP LightRoom 3 Photomatrix Pro Gimp SageLight PhotoScape Photo Brush Tintii Nik Software complete bundle Those are what I consistently use and if not free, have purchased. Below are the ones I am currently testing although trial limits are fast running out on the trial ones so I may never really get to see the potential of most of them so any comments are welcomed. Oloneo Photoengine Picturenaught Bibble SilkyPix Dynamic Photo HDR Ufraw Raw Therapee

I should mention one piece of software I used to like but found a big flaw in it: ACDSee. I used it to set up a really nice database of pictures and by typing words for the various subjects, I could instantly find any pictures having the subjects requested. This works fine only until you move all the pictures to another drive or computer. The properties you see in ACDSee are not the same properties used in Windows; thus all the descriptions and word data do not stay with the pictures.
Also, if I use the third party program ExplorerXP (by Nikolay Avrionov) I can rapidly do batch renames on my photos so they are all properly grouped and identified as to camera used, and can add digits if needed for renumbering large bunches quickly. But in such cases ACDSee does not keep up with the renames - so I had to look for a special file so as not to lose all the data, and find other ways to index my photos. I did find that if I manually entered such data in the Windows properties windows, the data DID stay with the photos. I am now looking for a good replacement for ACDSee for managing photos, and will peruse some of the info here. Thanks for all the info so far.

I am still using JASC Paint Shop Pro v.9 which had nearly everything PhotoShop had but at a much cheaper price. Using that I've been able to make very realistic colorized photos out of old black and white photos from those early days when very few pictures were shot in color.
I remember colorized photos from those early days were definitely NOT realistic, and old color print photos just haven't held their colors very well and in fact weren't all that realistic in the first place.
