Default Favourite kitchen toy

whats your favourite item in the kitchen?
for me, its my extractor. 1 meter wide offset over a 900mm 6 burner range. Offset so that other items like deep fat fryrers, toasters etc can sit under it when i use.

I love to cook and do a lot of it! So, there are just too many kitchen gadgets (I'm also a gadget-freak) for me to list in this post.

However, in keeping with the "spirit" of this tech-forum, I will list what is a tech item for kitchen use (and other). These are no longer available in this form, except on eBay.

This is the Radio Shack 22-325 Infrared Thermometer. I keep it next to the cooktop in my ready-tools drawer. I like to be sure that I have the proper cook temperatures both before starting, and during the process.

It is quite small and fits in the palm of my hand.

(This is not my photo it came from here.)

SPECIFICATIONS

Accuracy (at 78°F ambient):

whichever is greater
Below 30°F (–1°C) .................................................. ........................ ±7°F (±4°C)
Response time .................................................. ............................... 0.5 second
Operating environment ................................................. 32 to 120°F (0 to 50°C)
at a relative humidity of 10 – 95%
Power .................................................. ............................... 12V Alkaline battery
Distance to Spot Size (D:S) .................................................. ........................ 3:1

We use the IR thermometers for cooking on the BBQ and while camping. They are especially handy when cooking with cast iron dutch ovens. Snap-On has a nice one with a pistol grip shape and Harbor Freight has a small hand held unit very similar to the one in the picture you posted.

We also use them for wine, beer and mead making to check the temps. And our son uses them to tune the nitro engines on his RC cars and trucks.

OMG - my kitchen is my toy.

I'm a cookware and gadget freak too. I have a pot, pan and tool for almost everything. How many people do you know that have a dedicated asparagus peeler?

Probably my most used, useful recent purchase was a ThermoWorks Splash-Proof Super-Fast Thermapen Instant Read Thermometer

My favorite kitchen toy(s) would be cast iron pans. I love to cook in cast iron. Clean up is quick and easy too.

I gave away all my cast iron pans when we got a smooth-top (I know, I know, but it's the easy cleanup that I just have to have!) but my wife makes waffles in a cast-iron waffle maker.
