Default Home Builders

I can't believe we don't have any threads here yet. We still build a fair number of custom PC's for people.

In general they cost more than the RTU (ready to use) boxed systems but people still seem to like them better. The gaming crowd is big on custom built systems. Case modding is also pretty popular. Heck some of the cases we sell have so many fans in them I'd dare say they make more lift than a small airplane! Especially the systems with the big 220mm fans.

I love the fact that you can build a great working computer these days. I have only built one so far and I use it for gaming and music. I sure like my PC better than RTU ones.

I think it's great fun and I know that I will build more in the future. It's like building with Legos almost.

I haven't done any case modding, I'm a simple kind of guy, but I think that what people can do with cases is amazing.

I have built all of my machines--except for the notebooks. I was hoping we'd get some threads here because I'm always looking at parts.

The reason I build my own is that I invariably end up with spare parts after upgrades. Pretty soon, I have almost enough for another PC...and on it goes.

8 machines and counting...

I used to build my own PCs, but the last few were ordered as custom configured systems direct from the manufacturer. I considered building my last PC, but when I was putting my shopping list together, it would have cost me considerably more than what I paid for an identical system, even using many of the same components.

I know that's not the end of it though. In the course of the next 3-4 years that I keep this PC, I'm probably going to be adding and/or swapping memory, disks, video, etc. My tinkering and upgrading never cease.

Many years ago, before the first Windows came out, I had been using DOS machines, and had one from Panasonic. When Windows was introduced, and I needed new systems, I didn't build them, but had my systems made from scratch by locals, or I would buy a bare-bones and have it modified.

Default DOS lovers unite!

I'm glad there are DOS lovers out there! My first computer course was in the mid-70's when we used old fashioned teletypes to communicate with a mainframe computer 250 miles away. You could save programs but they would disappear at the end of each quarter. And then they also taught programming using IBM cards - a nightmare! After that, an Apple IIe was like going to heaven! Switched to IBMs, spent $1700 on an external 200 MB drive for my Toshiba 1000, and I was on my way.

I remember the punch cards too. We would pull a card out of someones stack and drop it on the top if they weren't paying attention to their job.

How about paper tape? That's what was used on the Tarawa class LHA's state of the art telephone system! And discrete components to make up the cpu and memory! Programing was done in machine language. Who says the military has the best technology???
