I'm loooking for an external hard to back up my photos.
What name brand would be a good unit. I had a Western Digital and it fried my USB port with a power surge. __________________

If you want to stay with an external USB drive, the Seagate FreeAgent and Maxtor OneTouch seem to consistently get the most favorable user reviews.
I personally a NAS (Network Attached Storage) disk solution, the DS210j from Synology. Since the drives are attached to the network, there is no danger of feedback or surges affecting my PC. I have 2 2TB disks in the diskstation in a Raid 1 configuration, so that even if one of the disks fails, the data is all still recoverable from the other disk. Before I moved to the NAS, I was using a Maxtor OneTouch which worked very well for my needs at the time.

I have 4 LaCie USB HDs stacked next to my computer, they look good, stack well, and perform flawlessly.
