I volunteer at a remote hotspring in Washington (goldmyer.org). We have a small 12v hydro system for lights and satelite internet at the cabin deep in the forest. I feel a small inverter would be your best bet, they hardly use any energy except for what you need for the actual load. We have a small sinewave inverter (about 300 watt capability) that powers our computer.

You might check out the triplite model PVINT375 it only uses .24 amp when idle and has 375 watt continuous output capability with 230v output. Of course the power required to drive it will be determined by the power requirement of the equipment it is running.
